An early-18th century, Venetian, painted and parcel gilt armchair
10137
The shaped foliate and shell carved padded back, scrolled arms and upholstered seat, with a rockwork and C-scroll apron on foliate cabriole legs, losses to the feet. The distressed upholstery now removed. First quarter of the 18th century.
Provenance : The Ayot Collection. The collection itself was put together by a private individual, accumulated mainly at auction, and named after the country house of the owner, essentially for marketing. It included several pieces that were bought at Christies sales, including Wilton House, Salisbury '94, and other sales across Europe. While the Venetian chair was probably bought from Christies in London, I cannot establish the provenance. .
