An exceptional, late-17th century, walnut, open armchair with faceted legs and arms

The rectangular back and seat, re-upholstered in a 19th century, strie velvet. The scoll arms supported by faceted turnings. The seat supported by faceted turned front and back legs joined by an 'x' stretcher with a central finial with losses to the top. Exceptional original colour and patina. English, third quarter of the 17th century.

Faceted legs and arms are only found on the finest model of turned armchair from the end of the 17th century, showing the skill of the cabinet maker and maximizing the display of the grain and colour of the walnut. This armchair has been in a private collection by repute for many years which explains its outstanding condition, the only loss is to the top of the central finial.
