The top with four square and four narrow rectangular, panels reinforced with strap work and bolts. The central rectangular key plate lifts to reveal the keyhole. Nail holes on the underside show that the lock has been replaced either because the original key was lost or the mechanism ceased to work. The key contemporary to and operating the later period locking mechanism on the interior of the lid, which most likely dates from the late 17th-early 18th century, throwing five bolts. The hinges are original. The interior is painted red. The frieze with a repeat of the four square and four narrow rectangular, panels reinforced with strap work and bolts and a false escutcheon centered on the front. The back with a repeat four square and four narrow rectangular, panels reinforced with strap work, and bolts. The sides with four square, panels reinforced with strap work and bolts and original carrying handles. The underside with a repeat of the four square and four narrow rectangular, panels reinforced with strap work, and bolts. Standing on bun feet. Retaining traces of the original, painted floral decoration, notably red pigments on the lower section and on the upper part of one side. Probably German. United with a mid-17th century rustic oak stool table. The plank top with a moulded edge. Two sets of metal nails and another set of screws show where it has been secured at different times in its history. The plain frieze with two replaced pine rails. Supported by baluster turned legs joined by square stretchers with moulded decoration. The outer edge of the upper and lower blocks outer edge on one leg have been lost probably due to worm and repaired so that they are now chamfered. Original toes. The oak is an unusual mellow color with a good patina. Measures: Height 51 cm, 20in, length 48 cm, 19in, depth 30 cm, 12in, The stool table £2,500.
