Robert Fournier (1915-2008), stoneware, tall flattened, bottle, circa 1960-1965
- This bottle is from the same series as No.2008.658.18 in the Metropolitan Museum New York - This elegant bottle is characteristic of Robert Fournier's signature pieces, using inventive glazes to create the colors and textures of natural forms - The main body has a crusty, saturated glaze rich in earth tones and the thick textured white glaze overflows from the lip of the bottle like molten, volcanic ash volcano cascading down a slope. - The base is impressed with his mark 'RF'. - In 1948 Fournier established the pottery department at Goldsmiths' College, London and became part of a group of avant-garde potters who opened up new aesthetic and technical possibilities in ceramics which included Bernard Rooke and Alan Wallwork who were students and lecturers at the college. - This piece comes from a private collection along with a waterscape vase by Rooke and a landscape vessel by Wallwork that were acquired directly from the artist.
