Fine, Pair of 19th Century, Ottoman Revival, Canakkale, Green & Ochre, Gilded & Moulded, Terracotta Vases De Demoiselle,
Characteristic of the unique Canakkale Ottoman Revival style in form, composition and colour. The green and yellow glazes suggest they were originally made for export to Provence.
Traditionally used to hold rose essence which was valued for its fragrance and symbolic value.
Canakkale was the most important centre of ceramic production during the Ottoman Empire. Edmunt Chishull observed in 1701 "…The town is ..Yet famous for a curious sort of earthen ware finely glazed, which is made here, and vended in great quantities…" (Travels in Turkey and Back to England, London 1747).
These ceramics were highly sought after in the 19th and early 20th century. - The form, coloring, relief, painted decoration and condition of this pair of ewers are exceptional.
