A massive, 4ft wide, 18th century, Swiss, 8-16 seater, walnut drawleaf table with slate inset, extending to 8ft., 9½ in.

The rectangular slate inset is framed with walnut. The leaves have cleated ends, one with an old repair. The frieze is decorated with ogee moulding, some replaced. Two thick rails below with solid moulding. The turned, splayed legs have applied panels on the upper blacks. They are joined by typically wide, rectangular stretchers with solid moulded edges showing healthy signs of wear, one with an old repair. Standing on bun feet. Good original colour and patina.

This model with a slate inset is not common, and I have never seen a 4ft wide period table. The width is always the problem with early tables and is generally 3ft maximum. The table is very solid and you could leave the leaves extended for dining, working or display. For dining it would seat 8 comfortably closed and 14-16 extended. It has come from a Chateau in Burgundy where they have a very good collection of Continental furniture.
