The shaped bedhead with a central fleur-de-lys. The four boldly turned posts joined by square stretchers. Most likely Tuscan. Measures: 184cm 72in wide, 213cm 83½indeep, 150.5cm 59.25in high Provenance: Count and Countess Martignone. Avid collectors, the Martignone's passion was for Fine furniture and old master paintings. This bed is from their Genoese villa, perched above the dramatic Ligurian coast. The Martignone family was ennobled in the 13th century by Ottone Visconte, 13th archbishop of Milan and in the 14th century a Martignone ruled Alexandria. During the Second World War a young doctor Ettore Martignone served with the Red Cross and was awarded the Maltese Cross in 1946. His wife Mariella created the influential postwar company Vampa Chemicals, and was awarded many honours. The glamorous, party-loving couple entertained prime ministers, popes and even the last king of Italy. They often travelled to America, and stayed with the Kennedys.
