The serpentine front on this magnificent commode is sophisticated and gives it gravitas. The undulating form is a masterpiece of carpentry. The carpenter has used different woods figuring to create a balanced mix of patterning; rosewood, walnut, boxwood with straight and burr grains He has also used different techniques, varied depths of crossbanding and the geometric and scroll inlay elevates its status as a luxury item It is in exceptional condition retaining the original locks, brass escutcheons and handles It has a rich colour and lustrous patina. It has come from a Palazzo and private collection in Rome where it has been reputedly since the 18th century hence the condition. These commodes are often very large and this is a practical small size The top is 3cm thick
